Did your dentist tell you a tooth needs a crown? Maybe you cracked a tooth, had a large filling break, or just finished a root canal. The first question most people ask is simple: how much will it cost? At Dr. G Dental Studio in Westchester, Miami, a porcelain crown is $1,200 and a crown after a root canal is $980. If your tooth needs extra support first, a core buildup is $280. You can see these and our other fees on our Miami dental prices page.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a custom cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth, above the gumline. It restores the tooth’s shape, size and strength, and helps protect what is left of the natural tooth. A porcelain crown is tooth-colored, so it can blend in with your smile.

When do you need a crown?

Your dentist may recommend a crown when a filling alone is not enough to keep a tooth strong. Common reasons include:

  • A large cavity, or an old filling that is too big or keeps breaking
  • A cracked, chipped or broken tooth
  • A tooth that has had a root canal, especially a back tooth that takes a lot of chewing force
  • Teeth worn down by grinding or clenching (see our post on night guards and teeth grinding, because grinding can crack teeth)
  • A tooth that is badly stained or misshapen, as part of a cosmetic dentistry plan

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. Dr. Gonzalez will look at your tooth and X-rays and tell you whether a filling, a crown or another option makes the most sense.

How much does a dental crown cost in Miami?

Crown prices in Miami can vary a lot from office to office. The material, the lab, the condition of the tooth and whether you need other treatment first all play a part. Many offices only share a price after an exam. We publish ours, so you know what to expect:

  • Porcelain crown: $1,200
  • Crown after a root canal: $980
  • Core buildup: $280 (only if your tooth needs it)

What is a core buildup?

When a tooth has lost a lot of its structure from decay, a break or a root canal, there may not be enough tooth left to hold a crown securely. A core buildup rebuilds the inside of the tooth so the crown has a solid base. Not every crown needs one. We will tell you before treatment if yours does.

Crowns after a root canal

After a root canal, a tooth can become more brittle, and back teeth in particular are often crowned to help protect them from breaking. At our office, a root canal is $980 for a front (anterior) tooth or $1,200 for a back (posterior) tooth, and the crown after a root canal is $980. If the tooth needs a core buildup, add $280.

For example, if a back tooth needs all three, the total would be $1,200 (root canal) + $280 (core buildup) + $980 (crown) = $2,460. Your exact plan is confirmed at your visit. Learn more on our root canal page.

What to expect when you get a crown

  • Exam and X-rays: Dr. Gonzalez checks the tooth, the root and the gums around it.
  • Preparing the tooth: the tooth is numbed, then shaped so the crown can fit over it. A core buildup is placed first if needed.
  • Model of your tooth: we capture a model of your tooth and bite so the crown is made to fit.
  • Temporary crown: in many cases you wear a temporary crown while your final crown is being made.
  • Final crown: we check the fit, color and bite, then cement the crown in place.

Dr. Gonzalez will explain how many visits your crown will take. We do not offer sedation.

Crown materials, in plain terms

Crowns can be made from porcelain or other ceramics, metal, or porcelain fused to metal. Each has trade-offs in looks and strength. Our listed $1,200 price is for a porcelain crown, which is tooth-colored and looks natural. Ask Dr. Gonzalez which option fits your tooth.

When a tooth cannot be saved: implants and bridges

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged to hold a crown. In that case, a dental implant may be the better long-term choice. Dental implants are $3,000 per tooth. We do not accept insurance for dental implants, but you can use HSA/FSA funds or financing. See our dental implants in Miami page.

If you are missing more than one tooth, we place implant-supported bridges. We prefer them over traditional tooth-supported bridges, which rely on the neighboring teeth and are weaker. We can repair existing tooth-supported bridges and dentures, but we do not make dentures.

Insurance, HSA/FSA and financing

We accept all PPO dental plans (PPO only; we do not take HMO plans or Medicaid). Many PPO plans help pay for crowns, but coverage depends on your plan, your deductible and your yearly maximum, so we cannot promise a set percentage. Call us before your visit and we can help you check your benefits. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.

Want to spread out the cost? We offer 0% financing through CareCredit and Cherry. Try our CareCredit & Cherry payment calculator, or read more on our financing and insurance page.

How to make your crown last

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily, especially where the crown meets the gum.
  • Keep up with your regular cleanings and checkups.
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or pens.
  • If you grind or clench, ask about a custom night guard to protect your crown and your other teeth.

Broken tooth or a crown that came off?

If a tooth breaks, a crown falls off, or you are in pain, call us. Same-day emergencies are welcome, and an emergency visit is $280. Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. See our emergency dentist in Miami page.

New patients can start with our $89 new patient visit, which includes a cleaning, exam, consultation and X-rays. If a tooth needs a crown, Dr. Gonzalez will explain your options and the exact cost before any work begins.
