- Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste that won't go away
- Gums pulling away from the teeth (recession)
- Loose teeth or a change in your bite
Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is why regular exams matter. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, it starts with bacteria in plaque and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Gingivitis: The Early, Reversible Stage
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by plaque sitting along the gumline. Bleeding while brushing is the classic sign. The good news: gingivitis is usually reversible. A professional cleaning removes hardened tartar that brushing can't, and we'll show you brushing and flossing techniques that keep it from coming back. New patients can start with our $89 new patient cleaning.
Periodontitis: When Gum Disease Advances
If gingivitis isn't treated, the infection can move below the gumline. Pockets form between the gums and teeth, and the bone that holds teeth in place can start to break down. This is periodontitis. We measure pocket depth around each tooth and take X-rays to see how far it has progressed, then recommend a plan that fits your mouth.
Deep Cleaning: Scaling and Root Planing
For periodontitis, the standard first treatment is a deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing (SRP). Scaling removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline; root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gums can heal and reattach. We numb the area for comfort, and treatment is often done in two to four visits by section of the mouth. Pricing depends on how many areas need care, so call for a quote.
Periodontal Maintenance
Gum disease can be controlled, but it needs follow-up. After a deep cleaning, most patients come back every 3 to 4 months for periodontal maintenance: a focused cleaning below the gumline plus pocket checks so we catch any changes early.
Insurance & Financing
We accept PPO dental plans (not HMO or Medicaid), and many PPO plans cover part of deep cleanings and maintenance. Four Financing partners are available. See financing and insurance.

Gum Disease FAQs
Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?
Bleeding gums are most often a sign of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. It can also come from brushing too hard or certain medications. An exam with Dr. Yordanka Gonzalez finds the cause.
Is gingivitis reversible?
Yes. Gingivitis is usually reversible with a professional cleaning and better daily brushing and flossing. Periodontitis, the advanced stage, can be controlled but bone loss does not grow back on its own.
What is a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)?
A deep cleaning removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline (scaling) and smooths the tooth roots (root planing) so gums can reattach. It is usually done by section of the mouth, with numbing for comfort.
How much does gum disease treatment cost in Miami?
Cost depends on how many areas need treatment and how deep the pockets are. Call (305) 217-6453 for a quote. A new patient cleaning is $89, and PPO insurance and four financing options are available.
Does PPO insurance cover deep cleanings?
Many PPO plans cover part of scaling and root planing and periodontal maintenance. We accept PPO plans (not HMO or Medicaid) and can check your benefits before treatment.
How often do I need periodontal maintenance?
After a deep cleaning, most patients with periodontitis return every 3 to 4 months for periodontal maintenance cleanings instead of the usual twice-a-year visits.
Is gum disease linked to other health problems?
Research links periodontitis with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Treating gum disease is part of protecting your overall health.
Do you treat gum disease in Spanish?
Yes. Hablamos español. Our team, including Lily at the front desk, can help you in English or Spanish.
Does a deep cleaning hurt?
A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is done with local numbing, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Your gums may feel tender or a little sore for a few days afterward, and over-the-counter pain relief usually helps. If you feel nervous, tell our team and we will go at your pace and check in with you throughout.
Can a deep cleaning be done in one visit?
Sometimes. Many patients have a deep cleaning split into two visits, treating one side of the mouth at a time, so less of the mouth is numb at once. Mild cases may be finished in one visit. Dr. Yordanka Gonzalez will recommend a plan after measuring your gum pockets. Call (305) 217-6453 to ask about your case.
Is gum disease contagious (e.g., by kissing)?
Gum disease itself is not considered contagious like a cold, but the bacteria linked to it can pass through saliva, such as through kissing or sharing utensils. Whether someone develops gum disease depends mostly on their own brushing, flossing, genetics and health. Good daily care and regular cleanings are the best protection.
Is it normal for gums to bleed during pregnancy?
Yes, it is common. Hormone changes in pregnancy can make gums swollen and more likely to bleed, often called pregnancy gingivitis. Keep brushing and flossing gently, and keep your dental visits, since cleanings are considered safe during pregnancy. Tell us you are pregnant when you book. The CDC has more on oral health in pregnancy.
Can a deep cleaning help gum recession?
A deep cleaning treats the infection and inflammation that can cause gums to pull back, and it can help keep recession from getting worse. It does not usually make receded gums grow back. If recession is advanced, other treatment options may be discussed. Dr. Yordanka Gonzalez can measure your gums and explain what will help in your case.
What causes bad breath even after brushing?
Bad breath that continues after brushing often comes from bacteria on the tongue, gum disease, dry mouth, food stuck between teeth, or certain foods and health issues. Brushing your tongue, flossing daily and drinking water help. If it persists, a cleaning and exam can find the cause. Mayo Clinic lists common causes.
